Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are your classroom sizes at Fulham Community School? At this time, our Grades 1-6 are all split classes, with the largest classroom containing 15 students.  This means each student receives an excellent amount of individual instruction and support.
  • What will students learn when they are in a split classroom?  All students will learn the curriculum for their grade level as outlined by Alberta Education.  For example, in a Grade 5/6 classroom, the students in Grade 5 will learn the Grade 5 Science, Social, Math, etc. curriculum and the students in Grade 6 will learn the Grade 6 Science, Social, Math, etc. curriculum.
  • What are some special activities that my child can enjoy at Fulham?  Our school has a long-standing tradition of not only doing a Christmas pageant, but also a spring play that involves every student.  Our students, from Kindergarten to Grade 6, are involved in building the sets, acting, singing, decorating, and setting up the gym for our guests.  Fulham Community School also holds two Book Fairs every year to promote literacy; we have a Winter Carnival where students spend the day enjoying all kind of fun outdoor activities, promoting healthy living; and we pride ourselves on local donations from generous sponsors that provide nutritious free Hot Lunches twice/month and a free Milk Program, modelling healthy living and making sure no student's dietary needs go unmet.  Our school has also recently added an Outdoor Classroom which contains seating for each classroom to take their learning into an outdoor setting.  We now have started the Fulham Community School Garden, as well, and have big plans to teach our students the self-sufficiency skill of growing their own food.
  • What are school opening and closing times?  Our school day begins at 8:30 and ends at 3:14.  Our school busses usually begin to arrive at the school at 8:20 and staff will supervise students on the playground until the bell rings.  If a student is dropped off prior to 8:20, they will wait in the library until supervision begins at 8:20, at which time they will go outside.
  • What do I do if my child is late to school?  Please notify your teacher by email if your child will be late, call the school, or email the school secretary.  Once you arrive, please come to the front door and ring the doorbell.
  • How do I report my child's absence from school?  Please let us know if your child will be away from school by writing in their agenda ahead of time, emailing their teacher, or notifying the office by phone or email.
  • How long do the children get to eat lunch?  Lunch begins at 12:30 and ends at 12:50.  Please keep in mind that if you send something that needs to be heated in the microwave, your child may spend about 5 minutes of that time waiting in line.
  • Is drinking water available?  Yes, we have two fountains here, as well as a water-bottle filling station.  We encourage each child to have their own water bottle, labelled with their name.
  • What should I put in my child's packed lunch?  We encourage children to bring a healthy lunch to school which could include items such as fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice, salads, and yogurts.  We ask that children do not bring nuts or nut spreads to school as some children have allergies.
  • If it is my child's birthday, can I send in sweets/treats?  Yes, you may send in a treat on your child's birthday to be shared with their class, as long as their teacher agrees and it does not contain nuts.  Please check in advance if there are any other diet-rated allergies, as well.
  • What do I do if my child is prescribed medication?  If your child needs to have medication at school, you must complete a form in advance- please ask your teacher or the office.  All medication held on school premises is kept locked and secure.
  • What happens if my child in injured at school?  Several of our staff members are trained in first aid and can offer assistance for minor injuries.  We will notify parents of any significant injury and appropriate first aid will be given until a parent/guardian arrives to take the student to receive medical services.
  • What do I do if I need to see a teacher?  The best course of action is to request a meeting, either through your child's agenda or by sending an email to your teacher.  If you need to speak with your child's teacher right away, please call the office and we will try our best to accommodate you.
  • How do you communicate with parents?  Our principal, Miss Marshall, sends a weekly email on Sunday evenings throughout the school year.  Our students each have an agenda book and write in it daily with the expectation that parents/guardians read their message and sign the agenda each day.  We also list any upcoming events on this website's calendar and post about activities at school on our Facebook page.
  • What should I do if I am worried about my child's progress?  If you have any concerns about your child's progress, we ask that you arrange an appointment to talk to your child's teacher.
  • Where do I go to locate my child's lost property?  We have a "Lost and Found" on the metal shelves near the office- please look through it, or contact the office and we can check for you.
